Training materials

Ok got a question for you all. What are some items that it would be nice to have detailed training over? I am helping to put together some training material and would be interested in peoples opinions of what would be valuable to cover.

For those of us with a little less experience, the strike zone.

Anything that would help me call a consistent zone. I also call to many low pitches strikes.

It depends on what your "advanced training" goals are.

Are you wanting to get into the mechanics of umpiring, or are you wanting to cover rules and interpretations? Also, is your audiences collegiate, high school, or rec league/tournament umpires?

Steve has a good point...what is your audience and their general level of experience?

If you are dealing with a lot of younger or newer umpires, you may target different things than you would with a more experienced group.

Regardless, it's always good to focus on rules and getting in depth with some of the less understood or mis-called rules. Examples are batting out of order, substitution violations, pitching rules, and my personal favorite (pet peeve), obstruction.

I handle some classroom sessions for our more experienced HS umpires in AZ. Shoot me a private message if you want and I can have some more in depth conversations with you.

Well we are looking at all levels. OBS and INT are on the to be created list already. BOO is a good idea, we have a DP/Flex and an EP presentation that we also go over some examples for lineup management, but don't have any BOO presentations.

We are looking for things that need to be taught, rules, interps, mechanics, game mangement etc. I am looking for things that you see your fellow umpires need and/or you would like to see further training cover.

This is mainly ASA focused, possibly to be used for some NFHS folks too.
