Question

Had a situation recently in a 14 & under tournament where the players (left handed) started at the back of the batters box, ran toward the front of the box while bringing the bat forward, around the body and through the strike zone, then ending up with a "behind the back bunt."

A protest ensues, and since nothing in the PONY rules addresses this, he ruling was that as long as the batter did not bring the bat through the strike zone on the behind the back transfer, there was no interference. If the bat went through the zone on the initial take off, interference would be called. Any thoughts on this??

The coaches called it a "California Slap" and said it is now all the rage on the west coast. Please forgive my east coast thinking!!

Cannot speak for PONY, but in ASA, a batter must make an offer to hit the ball. Since it is obvious there was no attempt to contact the ball when bringing the bat around the body, it sounds perfectly legal.

Just finished the 18U Nationals [AFA] where 21 California
teams were involved. Saw that attempt at least twice a game
and usually with good results as far as making contact. Most
have it down pat. It is a smooooooth move when properly
executed.

Joel,
I guess it just was not meant to be. I was on each complex at one
time or another and never saw her team. I umpired a total of 20
games during the actual tournament and another 9 in the Pre-Nats.
The Calif. Running Rebels won. I did their set up game on Saturday
nite when they beat Rock-N-Fire. Rebels played year before lasts
Champs the Lousiana Gold. [They used the name Reflections in the
2000 year]. Final was 2-1 with close play at the plate with the
runner coming from 1st on a shot to the gap in left center.
