Houston bound

Well folks my move to Houston has been approved by work. I should be hitting town around the first week of September.

I see that ASA has their own Metro association there. Other than that and TASO, are there any other sanctions that are big in the area? I am primarily interested in fast pitch.

Thanks!

Monty

Wow, sorry to hear that.

Good luck

If you don't know high humidity, you'll get the message in week one! (Not to mention the heart of the hurricane season.) Welcome to the Gulf Coast!

Hell, P'cola is the nastiest place I have been when it comes to humidity, even on the water. Last time I was on NAS, it was 95 & 95 at 7:30 AM for which I should have been ready since I used to live there.

Compared to Escambia, NOLA, Lake Charles and Houston are like cool summer resorts.:D

Monty, welcome to Houston.

Do you guys supply the obligatory gun rack and rifle or does he have to bring his own?:D

Skahtboi Thu Jun 18, 2009 01:33am

Come on, with carry and conceal, the rifle rack became a thing of the past!

I never thought about it until you mentioned it, but you're right. I haven't seen one in a long time. Perhaps it's the price of rifles and the litigious society that makes it so a man just can't even leave his loaded rifle in his truck anymore.

Welpe, have fun in Houston. It's a great place. If you don't know Spanish yet, the local Gringos might tease you for trying to learn it, but you'll enjoy yourself much more if you do. (I cut my Fast Pitch teeth on a Cuban men's league in Tampa.)

Oops, how nostalgic of me?!?!

Have they also put shoulders on the roads now so those crazy, Bud-swilling, young'uns don't need to pass you in the field while joy riding in the pick-up?

Hell, I'm so far behind the times, that is probably now an Amstel Light crowd in daddy's SUV. :D

Damn straight! Now back to cleaning my PT140. Like the American Express card, don't leave home without it. :D

AFAIK, most carry and conceal laws make it legal to conceal, not illegal to display.

Mike,

Most of my adolescence was spent in Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okoloosa counties. I lived in Ft. Walton Beach from 72 to 79, then moved to Gulf Breeze where I attended HS. I lived there from 79 to 83 then moved to Pensacola from about 84 to 88 when I graduated from UWF (University of West Florida) in 88. My mom still lives near Pensacola NAS in Warrington.

When did you live in Pensacola? And you are correct about the humidity. You sweat just walking to the mailbox to get the mail. During the spring you can need a jacket in the morning and then be wearing shorts in the afternoon. I even remember wearing shorts on Christmas day.

Welcome to Houston Monty. Depending on which side of Houston you live will dictate what kind of quality FP softball you will call.

Other associations around here are IFA, USFA, and USSSA that I know of. Most of the people on this board that are from out of state have no idea how diverse Houston really is. And, with regard to FP, you can call 7 days a week if you want.

Send me a note when you get here and I could steer you in the right direction.

Regards,
Andy

Actually, I lived in between Milton and NAS Whiting. I worked for Southland (7-11) before they sold out to Circle K in that area. I worked in the stores on Bayou Blvd (near 12th Ave), N Davis Hwy (near what is now Airport Blvd) and on Johnson Hwy (now Ave) at Hitchcock Dr. Talk about a yankee in hell, this was close.

In my world, that is depressing!

I'm looking forward to it though there have been several Christmases here where I could've gotten away with it.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and advice. I will be working in Bellaire and am looking to rent somewhere in the western or southwestern part of the city (we haven't decided yet). If anybody has any suggestions on which areas to avoid or to look at, I am all ears. :D

Regarding the rifle rack, I have the rifles, just need the rack and the pickup.

Dan, yo se un poquito. I will need to brush up on my Espanol. ;)

Thanks again folks.
