MAC championships - black shirt

Was watching the MAC Championship and saw the umpires wearing black shirts. They looked sharp! Very sharp. Is this the norm out there?

I don't know what the "MAC Championship" is, but our national federation has a brand new sponsor contract for base- and softball-umpires. As a part of that contract, we will recive black shirts some where this season. (We've started in the Easter weekend)
The moment I've heard that news it was april 1st;) However talking about it several weeks later the UIC and commisionair still believe we'll get black shirts... Hope that I than also can look sharp:eek:

wadeintothem Mon May 11, 2009 09:52am

MAC is a NCAA division. It was Miami vs I believe west michingan??? Cant be sure though.

NDblue Mon May 11, 2009 10:37am

I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to be wearing black in mid to late-July around here when temperatures can reach well over 100 degrees. Black is not my favorite color in the summer and it doesn't matter how well it breathes, it's still an attractant for the sun.

Welpe Mon May 11, 2009 10:39am

Black you say? I have to admit, I'm a bit surprised! They weren't wearing charcoal gray pants too, were they? :D

Try doing 9 games in one day for a U-Trip tourney with black pants and a red shirt in 98-degree heat.

Oh, and most of the games were single-umpire, too.

That sucked.

I love the people that spout off about how the grey slacks are much cooler than the navy and then insist on a dark color shirt.

Dunno if its the color more than the fabric that makes our uniform choices unbearable sometimes.
polyester is just plain HOT HOT HOT.

they need to make the uniform down here a speedo cut navy thong (banana hammock) and with a teal colored tube top and some flip-flops....
yeah im down with that... in a big way.

Never had a problem with polyester.

Why would you need a tank top? Oh, you mean the whole damn turret from the tank?

wadeintothem Mon May 11, 2009 02:38pm

It was an eve game - They wouldnt be any warmer than Navy Shirts.

I wouldnt want to be wearing black in the stockton heat myself!!!

Didnt catch if they were charcoal or heather. I would think heather. Either is better than the ugly navy pants.

I DID notice the PU was not wearing plate shoes, which I thought was odd. Maybe he forget them.

That's what polo bue (w/black collar) is for. Or cream, if you must, but I'm not a big fan of that color

Well why else do so many umpires have every color around? ;)

wadeintothem Mon May 11, 2009 03:32pm

The big problem I do see with too many variations is the expense and never knowing what the heck uniform to bring. I had that problem in little ball, had to bring 5 different shirts.. and somewhat in men's NAFA ball. You never know what your partner remembered to bring. At least in ASA that is not an issue. It would be a big problem at a tournament if too many uniforms were allowed.

But they still looked sharp and professional last night (tennis shoes behind the plate aside  ). Ive liked the direction NCAA ball is headed in for the past few years. They are doing well mechanics, training, and appearance.

Ref Ump Welsch Mon May 11, 2009 08:30pm

I noticed the crew in the Big XII championship game were wearing the black shirts as well.

Amen! :)

I don't do enough baseball in cold weather to justify it now, but a plate coat is something I would be all too happy to save up for once softball comes around on it.

CajunNewBlue Tue May 12, 2009 02:08pm

we need a drug testing policy.

Don't think Seth realizes that when wearing a coat, one needs to wear a tie ;). Oh, and that cute little beanie!!

Nah, he posted the Norman Rockwell painting of the three umpires standing in the rain.

I'm pretty sure you can wear a plate coat without the beanie, bowtie or long sleeved white shirt though. :D

The plate umpire for the Big XII championship was wearing a long sleeve navy blue shirt. Have you had any comments from coaches about your eyes lately? Might be correct this time:rolleyes:

Are you sure we were watching the same game? I was watching in a bar on a big screen and it was obviously black, and my buddy agrees (and he plays plenty of softball).

Dakota Wed May 13, 2009 09:02am

Well, unless you were watching in person, you really don't know for sure what the color was. It doesn't take too much to figure that a bar TV would not have the best color adjustment and may render navy as black.

Skahtboi Wed May 13, 2009 11:03am

And since I have a pretty good inkling that Larry (DNTXUM P) was there, I tend to believe him.

Ref Ump Welsch Wed May 13, 2009 11:42am

True, the bar TV probably didn't have good coloring...but then again, Fox Sports Midwest has some pretty crappy coloring so it may have looked black.

Beyond that, is he not also one of the few approved vendors for Big 12 softball, as well as on the conference roster? I think he would certainly know if black was an approved uniform shirt.
