This happened years ago. I had a runner on 1B with 2 strikes, 1 out in a youth game. Runner is leaving on the pitch, batter swings and misses at a pitch in the dirt, the batter makes it to first. I then tell her she's out anyway. Between innings, here comes the offensive coach (you know where this is going, right?).

"Now, the runner wasn't on first base, so really first wasn't occupied..."

Oh, I forgot...night game.
