Purist...
Although it didn't come into play in this CWS (since Texas did not lose), there has not been an "official" CWS (IMO) since the NCAA buckled to TV and did away with the "if" game.

And I do believe that UT (Texas) was the first casulty of the TV rule.........either 1982 or 1984..........that was after all a long time ago.........grin

The NCAA has arranged the brackets into two independent double elimination brackets & the championship is decided by a single game between the two bracket winners.
This was probably done to avoid the embarassing situation of the champion and the runner-up having a 1-1 head-to-head record in the tournament. Technically, then, South Carolina did not come from the losers bracket and Texas from the winners bracket. SC had to win the "if" game against Clemson to win their bracket. They both were champions of their brackets. But even so, if SC had won the game, both teams would have had only 1 loss, but SC would have been crowned the champion. If they think the double-elimination format is too confusing to the TV audience, how about a 3 game series between the 2 bracket winners? |
