I was a spectator at my daughter's game (and an ugly game it was - too many errors) last night. I typically just enjoy (or wince at, as the case may be) the goings on, but seeing as I was seated in the bleachers right next to the coach at the end of the bench - I couldn't resist this one.
Here's the play - R1 on 3rd, R2 on 2nd, 1 out. Batter bunts, F3 fields the ball and freezes R1 about halfway up the line. R2 in the meantime, rounds 3rd realizes that R1 is now trying to go back - and heads for 2nd. R1 gets tagged out. R2 is at second. I'm watching all this and all of a sudden I realize what just didn't happen. I lean over and ask the coach if he saw the runner touch 3rd on the way back to 2nd. He had been so busy watching the play on R1 that he didn't notice. He makes the appeal and gets the out. The field ump was just waiting to make the call - he was grinning from ear to ear. Same game, BU is eating sunflower seeds (maybe peanuts??). All I could think was that if he had to sell a safe call, seeds would have been flying everywhere. I had some parents rolling with that thought. -Kono |
