Runner on second. One out Batter hits pop fly to first base side firstbaseman catches ball in foul territory runner on second tags up and advances to third. Is that legal? I called her back to second but coaches were upset.

Sure.........

A runner may advance at their own risk if a foul fly is caught...........

Luther,

Sorta echoing Joel's post but <b>any</b> fly caught, runners
may tag and advance. Also on a foul tip. I bet that coach
was a little upset....

Welcome to the board.

Just to be sure nobody misinterprets whiskers' post: runners can advance on a foul tip, but of course they don't have to "tag up." A foul tip is in no way treated as a caught fly ball (or even as a foul ball).

Every year, I have to explain to coaches that a foul tip is treated exactly like a pitch that is swung on and missed.

There are some umpires on the baseball/softball boards that need to learn this.

Thanks,

That is true, my statement could have been misleading...

tag up on foul fly

Thanks for the quick response. I was confused with this situation because of reading NFHS rule 7-4-1c Where the batter is out on a foul fly but the penalty listed on the bottom of page 56 in the 2002 rule book says that all runners must return to the base they occupied at the time of the pitch and the above situation is included this is very confusing....

Luther,

Rule & Sec 4 Art 1c...
<b>A batter shall be called out when her foul [other than a foul tip
not a third strike] is caught in flight by a fielder or such catch
is prevented by a spectator reaching into the playing area:</b>
The batter is out and since a spectator interfered and kept the
fielder from making the catch, runners are returned to base occupied
at [TOP] time of the pitch...that is why they don't advance..Had
she made the catch, the runners could have advanced at risk of being
put out..

Luther,

Look at it this way, there is no such thing as a foul fly ball, just a fly ball over foul territory.

Runners may tag and advanced after ANY line drive or fly ball is touched by any defender.
