Free recruiting advice

I am an assistant coach on travel team in Pennsylvania. Recently, I started a website with free recruiting advice. I hope you find it useful. http://www.eteamz.com/RECRUITINGTIPS/

Coach, while I appreciate the idea of sharing, I don't know of many umpires who get recruited to play softball in college. As this is an officials' site (hence the name Official Forum), this information will be of little use to the members.

I was looking for softball forums

my mistake. However, I assume that at least some of you have kids who play the game or know players who might benefit from the information. So please share it as you see fit.

Is any of this advice helpful to me in recruiting college softball players to umpire FP Softball?

No

but you do give me an idea about an addition that I can put on the website about giving back to the game. So let me think about the best way to do that.

Thought about your question about recruiting

players to be umpires and here is what I suggest. To recruit anyone to do anything you have to find the way that the thing you want the people do fits their needs. College students, whether they are players or not, want two things during the summer, money and free time. If I wanted to recruit college kids to be umpires, I would go to the coaches of the local colleges and university. I would not necessarily limit it to softball coaches. I ask if I could get 20 mins to talk to the kids after practice one day in the spring. I would pitch umpiring as a summer job where you can make $300-400 a week, working 2-3 days a week with rest of your time free. I compare it to a summer job where someone was making say $10 an hour and how a softball game, at say $35 per game, is over $20 per hour. I would do it in the spring as opposed to fall because the kids are already thinking about summer vacation.

I hope that helps.

I have added a portion to my website about giving back, asking college players to become coaches, umpires, etc. I would appreciate it if anyone has information about how to become certified umpires if they could email it to me at [email protected], if possible, include links to any websites. I will be happy to add it to my site. Thanks

There have been some comments made about this being a site for umpires and how your site may not get the attention it deserves. I looked at some of the information you have and was impressed with what you have done. Thanks for contributing.

Thanks

I thought it was the "official softball website", not a site for officials, lol.

Hope you are not a defense attorney. Oh, I thought you said "5 years in this life", not "5 years to life".

I just chalk it up to the natural

relationship between umpires and coaches. Anyway, thanks to be inspired by a post on this site, I added this page to my website:

Nice site. Under "Finding help becoming an ump" you could add the ASA web site http://www.asasoftball.com/umpires/index.asp
it will take them right to the Ump site.

Good luck!

Recruiting new officials

Florida HSAA paid for a campaign that we can use to attract new umpires. It's designed to support all FHSAA sports -- not just softball. Check out www.becomeanofficial.org. The Dick Vitale commercial bits are interesting.

Hey CitiLawyer:

Have you posted your info on this site yet? www.heybucket.com. You might find a bigger market there.
