Home team submits their lineup with the DP in the 9th position
and is the teams second pitcher. DEFO is the pitcher and in
the tenth position. In the top of the 3rd inning, coach
puts the DP in to pitch. fine In the bottom of the
3rd inning, the DP now pitching walks, coach ask for time,
and sends in a courtsey runner for DP, which is now the
pitcher. Legal ~ Illegal.

Glen,
Yes, it is legal to do that since the DP was the person who pitched last. It would not have been legal had the DEFO re-entered and batted for the DP(DP pitched last time in the field), because a team can only use a courtesy runner for the pitcher or catcher who fielded that position in the last inning.

That's a twist on the DP/DEFO that we hadn't discussed.

I see where y'all had a tournament recently - we've still got inches of snow here and it was close to 40 today. Oh well, got my first meeting for Fed ball in a couple of weeks and should start working out with the local college team a week after that (they ended up 4th in the WCWS last year & only lost 2 players).

Steve,

Even though the DP is now in the pitching position, she
is the still the DP correct? and is batting for the pitcher. So would Rule 8 Section 11 E.
hold water in this
case? Should one allow the CR since in reality the DP is
Pitching but is still the DP.

BTW, handed out 25 copies of your DP/DEFO Comments. All
that received them thought that your article should be
exactly how it should be printed in the rule book. They
all thought it was a great article.

Glen,
Go ahead and allow that - Case book play 8-11-6 alludes to that situation.

8.6.E prevents using a courtesy runner for the DP when it's the DEFO who is pitching or catching. When the DEFO leaves the game and the DP is the pitcher or catcher, it's OK to use a courtesy runner.

Steve,

Many thanks. That is what I did ~ but the opposing
coach put the doubt in my mind with his statement,
that the DP was always the DP no matter what. Feel
much better about it now. Again Thanks.
