runner hit with ball

In Federation softball, is the runner out if she is hit by a batted ball that has not passed a fielder but
no fielder can make a play on the ball? Dave

Yes.........No......er,....maybe?

NFHS 8.4.n is the referenced rule, but it does not read "passes" a fielder, but "touches" a fielder.

You can sell the out, but the rule could stand to be corrected.

I believe the fielder must have a chance to "make an out",not just a chance to make a play when determining interferrence.

Reading straight from NFHS (FED)

Rule 8-4 RUNNER IS OUT

Article 2-n. Any runner is out when: a fair batted ball contacts her before it touches a fielder; or after it passes any fielder, except the pitcher, and the umpire judges that another fielder has a play (5-1-1-f).

In this case the runner is out......it has not passed a fielder......

It's that teeny print in the NFHS book. Also........it is so convoluted on crossreferencing and such.

Many times I look in the index and it sends you to a section that does not really deal with what you are looking for.

I think Fed. needs to clarify this. I think it should read-- Any runner is out when a fair batted ball contacts her before it PASSES a fielder(not touches a fielder) What do you think?

Joel,

I believe the NFHS rule book is one of the hardest rule books to understand. They need to go to a grocery store and learn how they associate products with one another and apply that philosophy to their rule book.

Of course, I'm a bit prejudiced, but I think ASA's book is relatively simple to read and understand compared to the rest.

Agreed.........

Compared with OBR and FED.......the ASA book is a snap.....

The Pony girls rule book has made an amazing transformation in the last couple of years.......

In this years........they used the POE straight from the ASA book.......I haven't done a line by line comparison.......but from what I have seen it is exactly the same.
