Mercy rules NFHS
 

I know I am losing my mind, I umpire. :D
I can't for the life of me find the mercy rule in the 2006 NFHS rule book. Can someone help me find the rule? Or is it by state adoption?

As a side question, here in Illinois, the IHSA hasn't adopted the 15 after 3 rule yet. Has anyone else? Thankfully, our elementary assoc has.

I was watching a high school varsity game the other day and the home team won by 3 touchdowns and a field goal. They played the entire bench, even the manager i think.

None. Sometime ago there was a Minneapolis City game that was 48-0 after three, extremely long innings. They called the game.

Michigan has a 15 after 3 rule, and I think maybe 10 after 5, too? Anyway, Rule 4.2.3 - state association can adopt game ending procedures.

The longest game for me so far this year was a JV game between a historically mediocre program (Team A) and a historically bad program(Team B). Team A finally won by something like 27-7. With very few hits. 4 1/2 innings. In 2 3/4 hours. In 35 degree weather. With a stiff northernly breeze. And, of course, snow flurries. I had the bases, and literally started matching the color of my jacket!


On the other hand, I had Team A from above a year or so ago against a historically GOOD program once ( Team C), and marveled how the Team C coach carefully worked the game, never totally pounding Team A in any one inning..getting his kids all in, getting three different pitchers work. We were out of there 15-0 in an hour and five minutes...:D

Our state association in WA leaves it up to the local leagues/districts/conferences to decide the game ending rules. We have some who use 15 after 3, but most are 10 after 5. At times, even with the 10 after 5, if it's out of hand after 3 turns the folks on the wrong end are volunteering to pack it up for the day.

By the same token, they also leave it up to the locals to decide when to implement the tie-breaker...it goes from the 8th to the 11th, depending on the league.

Here in Nebraska it is 12 after 3 and 10 after 5. Dave

In our area Varsity is 10 after 5. Jv is also 10 after 5 but we also have a 2 hour time limit and we CAN have ties.

Count yourselves lucky. In MA, the state allows each conference to detemine its game ending procedures with the exception of the post season. In the conferences I have worked, we have no 3rd inning run rule :( , only 15 after 5 and rarely use a tie-breaker.

Michigan game shortening rules:

15/3, 10/5
By mutual concent after 15 run difference
May use time limits for sub-varsity
May establish shorter games. (Around here freshmen play 5-inning DH, some JV are moving to 6-inning DH.)

In Texas, the state adopted the 10 after 5 rule, but later said that if the districts so choose, they can use a 15 after 3 rule.

In Florida it's 10 after 5, with no exceptions for extreme mismatches. In 2005 we had a really bad team agree to end a couple of 22-0 games after 3 innings. (Actually, it was the losing coach who made the offer.) FHSAA made the teams return on separate days and finish 5 innings. :confused:

This should just be recorded as a 7-0 forfeit.

That was the other option, but that comes with financial (and other) repercussions for the forfeiting school, so FHSAA let them finish instead.
