Is it a foul tip if the ball goes from the bat, not higher than the head of the batter, directly to the cather's glove, but then pops out of the glove just a little bit and then the cather secures the ball?

As long as the ball hits the catcher's mitt or bare hand first, it's a foul tip even if it caroms off his/her chest protector and is then caught.

Had my first Foul Tip with a steal last weekend.........

The 18yo catcher did not make a play on the stealing runner because she thought it was a foul ball........wanted me to send her back.........she said......."Hey blue......the batter tipped that didn't she......??"

I said "yup......but unlike a foul ball.......a foul tip is a live ball"........she looked puzzled and said "really??"

I even got the mechanic right..........grin

Cool

That's the toughest part. To not get the "fou...." to come out due to the movement of the runner takes many years of booting the call. I know the feeling when you finally get it right and the coach comes out and starts yelling. Not only do you have the base stolen ... now the coach suddenly wants to leave the game. Go figure!!!
