What are your thoughts on this one guys??

ASA, State Tournament - utilizing double
base.

Batter walks, races to 1B, turns to the
outside returns to orange portion of 1B
assumes her I'm stealing position;
meanwhile, pitcher is in circle receiving
signal - when BU calls *no pitch* R1 is
out - not on base while ball is in circle
and no play being made.

Papasmurf

If the baserunner is only making contact with the orange side and none of her foot is touching white this is a correct call.

Kinda picky but they got to learn somehow

Don,

I agree, our UIC told us to avoid it rest
of way by telling coaches to have runners
in right position - he did not like the
idea of a cheap out since we were deep in
tournament when this became a factor. UIC
at tournament also has a lot to do with rule
changes, and this will be looked at.

thanks for reply,

I'll grant that this double base is kinda new and may need some additional discussion at the pre-game to remind coaches. And in league games, maybe even invitational tournaments, I can see calling time and reminding players/coaches that the orange base is "not there" for anyone except the batter-runner. But I am of the opinion that in state championship play, this violation should be called - just like removing the helmet during a live ball. By the way, we used the double base in our men's districts this past weekend. They loved it - and these guys usually whine about everything.

Steve,

The rules for double base are almost as bad as the DEFO. The defense can use the colored portion on a throw from foul territory on the right side OR on any errant throw. The second half of that negates the safety factor of the double base and give the defense a distinct advantage on a bad throw.
