10-u base advances
Worked a tournament this weekend for 10u. My question is if a runner on 1st steals 2nd, and the throw goes in the outfield, can the runner advance to 3rd.

Yes, the runner can advance at her own risk and may be put out. At the end of the play, if the runner has not been retired, she will be sent back to 2nd. |

Last year our local rules for 10 and under allowed only one base when stealing. The intent was to make it less risky for the hind-catcher to throw the ball. They wanted to see more action from the catchers in that regard. I don't care for that one base rule, but it did cause a lot more attemps to throw out runners. Catchers were throwing every time a runner was stealing, even if the ball got away from the catcher and the runner was a step or two away for the base they were attempting to steal. From games that I watched I think it took something away from the game by removing the fear of further advancement of the runner should the ball get past the fielder. I don't know if they will keep that rule this year or not, but I hope they drop it. There's one other thing it did that I don't think is good for catchers, and that is getting them into a possible habit of throwing when it's too late to risk a throw. And it wasn't good for base running instruction either. ..Al |
