Scenario:
Top of the 3rd inning, no one on, no one out, 0-0 count. F1 throws a strike. F2 throws the ball to F3. F3 then throws it to F1.

ASA FP Rules: 6-7-B says the catcher must return the ball directly to the pitcher... Effect of an illegal pitch.

Would you ever call this?

Yes, and did it at the 18-U Gold Nationals last year. A little bit different scenario, but end result same.

Illegal pitch.

So what's the count? Is the illegal pitch on the first pitch (the one you just called a strike?) or the next pitch?

i.e.: is your count now 1 ball 0 strikes? or 1 ball 1 strike?

The count would now be:

1 ball
1 strike

As soon as F2 threw ball to F3, we had ILLEGAL PITCH.
