Batter Runner hits a single and rounds first. On the way back to first, she is obsturcted by 1B. BR sees the BU signal obstruction, reverses direction, and takes off towards second. She gets tagged out 3/4 of the way there. Whats your call?

Assuming F1 made no "play", LBR would take precedence over the OBS.
OUT. |
My first reaction:
I had her protected back to 1B, not 2B. Dead ball Obstruction. Award first base. My second reaction: She's an idiot. Hammer her out. I like my first reaction better. |

My reaction is a smart baserunner. When she is tagged out I have a dead ball and return runner back to 1st base. A runner can not be put out between the bases where she was obstructed.

What does the LBR have to do with this play? The pitcher wasn't even mention as an involved player. Besides, LBR is not an exception to an OBS runner being put out between the two bases where s/he was OBS. As already noted, award runner on 1B. |

My first reaction was to ask if there was more to this play than meets the eye, because awarding 1B is the obvious answer. |
Did she ever touch first? If she did and then "reversed" toward 2nd then she would be out as she was only protected to 1st. After touching first she isn't protected anymore. Just a possible spin on the sitch.

This isn't true. Direction is irrelevant. Now, if you are referring to another sanctioning body's rules, you may be correct, but it would be nice to know if that is the case. |

ASA rules (of course).... ball never gets to the circle..boomer sooner..why is which way she goes between those two bases relevant?

I would say no out is possible here, let the runner stay on 1st base.

My first reaction - Dead ball. You - 1st base.
My second reaction - why do people come on here and invent rules? LBR overrides OBS? Uh - no. Runner loses protection when she changes direction? Uh - no, not that either. |

Mike,
I know you can't provide an example of something that doesnt exist, but just to make sure I understand. Runner rounds 1st and is obstructed, ball gets back into circle and R1 has stopped and is heading back to 1st sees BU with OBS signal and heads to 2nd (meanwhile F1 is standing in circle with ball not making a play on the runner). Would correct call be Dead ball, I have OBS, runner is awarded 1st base? Cause you don't call dead ball till the runner is out, which in this case (if no OBS) when she stopped the 2nd time to head to 2nd, so now you award 1st on the OBS. Would that be a correct call? |
