If it's not on the ground completely outside of the box until AFTER contact, it's just a foul ball.

I think you answered the wrong question. It was not abput being out for batting the ball while outside the box. It was about being hit with a batted ball and whether the B/BR is still protected as inside the box after touching the ground outside the box.
