I got a good pair of plate shoes but just found out i will be doing some base work at Varsity level. Not much ,but enough that I need a reasonably priced pair of base shoes.i would rather not wear my plate shoes as base umpire. Any suggestions or hints as to what kind of shoes will work for the bases ......thanks for any info or help.

New Balance

For bases I wear New Balance. Love 'em. Same shoes as worn by MLB umpires on the bases, and worn by many others. And...one of our umpires found them at the outlet mall...very same shoe...got me a pair...no difference from the regular-priced shoe...I swear by them now for workin the bases...

I too wear new balance, but I just wear their black basic running shoe. IT holds a pretty good shine and is comfortable. Their base shoes haven't been made in a size wide enough for me yet (but I'm told they're getting there).

If you want a comfy shoe, go with new balance...especially if you wear a wide size.

Tanel shoes are great looking and are supposed to be comfortable, but they don't make anything but regular width...they too are supposedly looking at making a wider shoe.

Official uniform (ASA) requires the shoes be all black. Do they have white trim?

Even if the code doesn't require all black, all black looks beter (IHMO). As kellerumps said, it's easy to take off the white if it is stitched on, and if not, it can be covered with some leather dye or a like product.

I don't see a problem using basketball shoes, so long as they are cleaned before you use them again indoors.

New Balance all the way!!!!! The white N is easily removed. I've tried wearing Basketball shoes but found that I slip way to easily.

FU - I think Honigs has a EEEE width of New Balance Now....I know you have Flinstone Feet but surely EEEE will fit

Yabba Dabba Dooooo! EEEE will fit with a little stretching...I actually wear a 13 EEEEE. 14 EEEE will give me just enough room to fit, but I need to wear two pairs of socks...oh well.

I'm just glad my feet stopped growing when I was 11.

I can only wear wide shoes, and I swear by the New Balance 502 cleated shoe for ASA SP. I don't know if it's appropriate for FP on the bases. The shoes are almost all black, come in wide widths, have a soft uppper (not leather), and a cleated, rubber sole, much like the old Nike shark-type rubber soles. Best of all, they are available on many online stores that sell the NB brand, usually for under $40. This is not a basketball shoe, but a rubber-cleated, soft shoe.

Other than that, all I've found in wide widths is the NB soccer-cleated shoe.

Does anywone know where to find FP Plate shoes (with toe plates) in wide (E) and extra-wide (2E to 6E) widths?

Thanks.

I have been using Dr Scholls shoes sold at Wal Mart for a couple of years now. They are very comfortable, and CHEAP! (I like the cheap part!). The KIWI liquid polish keeps em looking nice also.

On your NB shoes, and most any with white marking printed on, try some nail polish remover, that should get the white off. I use laquer thinner, I have a lot of that around the paint shop.

Bluefoot, I think my +POS plate shoes are EEE. They fit my fat feet very nice, but are like wearing boat anchors.

Honigs has a pair of wide shoes...low cut and high cut. They are supposedly 3E shoes. I have a pair of 13 Wides that are good width-wize but I need to get a longer pair. Good deal for anyone who wants them. They've never been worn, I just bought them like 2 weeks ago, so they even smell new.
