Question

What are the differences between a disqualified vs ejected player/coach?

What I've got so far is:

1. Disqualified - You can play short handed; Ejected you must have a substitute. You can't play short handed.

2. Disqualified player can remain on the bench. So can a disqualified coach. A disqualified player can be a base coach. I'm assuming that a disqualified coach can not. He must remain on the bench.

3. Forefeit the game if a disqualified/ejected player/coach participates in the game.

Does an ejected player/coach have to leave the field? Am I missing anything?

A player is DQ'ed for specific rule violations. Example: unreported substitute.

A player is ejected for flagrant or unsporting conduct. Example: throwing a bat in anger.

The first is considered less serious than the second. Hence, for the first, the team is allowed to continue as if that player just had to leave early. That same privilege is not granted to a team with an ejected player.

As I remember, "disqualified" was added as an alternative to "ejected" a few years ago, along with the stipulation that a team could play shorthanded if it went under because of a disqualification.

I think the change arose from a situation that occurred in an ASA tournament. A team was far ahead, but late in the game a player hit a ball over the fence for an excess home run and was ejected. The team had no subs and had to forfeit.

RW,
Tom & Grey gave you the right answers.

As for the DQ'd coach - yes, coach remains on the bench & may not leave the bench unless there is an injury or the game is over - I'd also allow a DQ'd coach to leave the bench to breakup a fight.

As for the ejected coach - gone from sight & sound. The ejected player must stay on the bench - that's a safety thing in that we don't send a young female away unsupervised.

I've ejected only a few players over the years. But three I ordered completely off the premises (two in one doubleheader).

Steve, you sexist pig! Would you send a young male away unsupervised? At a Catholic school? Okay, just kidding!!!

Speaking ASA, this is not a rule, nor requirement. There is a vast difference of responsibility between scholastic leagues and rec/travel ball. The umpire may allow them to remain on the bench, as they may the coach (which is a bit absurd), but it is not required.
