Supposedly the requirement for NOSCAE approved masks has been in effect for 6 weeks. But - you do not have a NOSCAE standard. Is this a problem right now? (Not an issue for NFHS because we have a year to go.)
NOSCAE wrote a proposed standard in June 04 and was to keep it open for 6 months for community input. They were to legalize it in January 05. But as of mid-February it is still a proposed standard. If you have championship play right now can you enforce your new rule requiring NOSCAE approval? WMB |
JMO, and without benefit of ASA clinics yet, but ...
Stamped / labeled - approved. Not stamped / labeled - not approved. I don't need to reference the printed standard. NOCSAE has apparently (based on one manufacturer's press announcement) been issuing approvals since at least last May. I would not be surprised if during the early season (non-Championship play) we are instructed to ask the coach to certify that all of his team's equipment is legal, and then if it looks like a face mask, it is a face mask. It is not at all unusual for 3rd party testing / approval agencies to begin issuing approvals after the draft standard has passed muster but before the final standard is actually published. A careful reading of the NOCSAE proposed standard on their web site will show it has had a couple of minor revisions since it was first published. |

As I said, no rules clinics yet. Maybe they'll strictly enforce it.

Face mask standards
According to our local JO commissioner, Schutt and Rawlings have the only NOCSAE approved face masks.
A fly in the ointment is that supposedly there are no stickers for these facemasks to show they are NOCSAE approved because the standard has not been published. (Heaving big sigh...knowing this will be a problem...) |
I have stayed out of this topic on both boards. (There is
a very lenghty discussion on eteamz on this.) Rule 3, Section 5, E: E. Helments...All JO FP batting helmets shall be equipped with a securely fastened NOCSAE approved face mask guard. Comment: To insure the new face mask/guard is permanently attached. With the helment having the NOCSAE approval stamp/seal, and the face mask/guard permanetly attached cannot we accept this as being an approved combo? May be a dumb question, but just curious. I have done 5 HS game this year, with nine of the ten teams involved having the face mask/guard. All the helmets were NOCSAE approved, none of the mask/guards were attached anyway but professionally. No face mask/guard had a NOCSAE stamp. I personally would have accepted these in any game by any association I was working for. |

UIL
Having lived and worked in TX most of my life, making assumptions about UIL is as dangerous as ice fishing in July.
