Hi there can anyone give me a definitive answer on the following?

Fastball. Batter in the box. Ball is pitched. It is inside. Batter attempts to avoid being hit. The ball hits the batter on the arm just below the elbow and bounces off and hits the bat. Umpire calls foul. Given that the ball hit the batter first should it not be a walk.
Umpire claims that whether the ball hit the batter's arm first is irrelevant. Walk or foul?

Regards,

Pete

Pete,

"DEAD BALL" as soon as it hit the batter, therefore
nothing else could happen.

Welcome to the board.

thanks

sorry to be obtuse but dead ball = walk?

and if that is the case it confirms my belief that whatever happens after the batter is hit is irrelevant.

Nice to be aboard. Played a bit of baseball but am not as confident about softball rules.

Pete.

Pete,

Sorry, Yes, HBP. If batter made an effort to avoid the pitch, as stated,
then s/he is entitled to 1B.

Pete,

Notice by your profile you are from Australia.

How is the FP (fastpitch) action down under?
Some of the best pitchers I ever saw came from
Australia.

I play 3rd grade mens and the standard is pretty ordinary. But we have fun. Out team are mainly boring old farts who are trying to relive our youth.

I umpired a 2nd grade womens game last week and was amazed at how low the standard was, particularly the pitching.

I should point out that our comp is in Newcastle which is a regional area near Sydney so the standard would not be up to a capital city.

Where are you?

I am in East Texas, where play pretty much year round.
Take off the last week of Dec., and first week of Jan. Then we start up again. That is if the rain does not stop us. I do AFA, ASA, USSSA, NSA, NFHS and some college. All fastpitch.
