Talking

Bases empty........B1 is obstructed by the catcher but hits a gapper to left field......B1 is thrown out on a close play at 2nd.

What is the call?

Joel

If you can cite the rule......more's the better.

I don't really agree with this rule, but that doesn't matter. The obstruction is waived because the batter advanced 1 base safely. Batter-Runner is out at second, no option is given. In ASA, this is Rule 8, Section 1 (Batter becomes Batter-Runner), see EFFECT in Article C or D. I don't recall which it is right now. Anyway, the effect here is that if the batter-runner and all runners safely advance 1 base, then the catcher's obstruction is waived. If all do not safely advance 1 base, then the offensive manager has the option of the play or the penalty. If any try to advance further than 1 base, they do so at their own risk.

Steve has it right. ASA Rule 8.1.D.1-4.
