Hijacked the below statement from Mike. It was posted as
a reply to another individual, but works great here. I
was prepared for the mill of the run HS fall game, but I
got a Gem.

Finally got that one good game out the Monday night HS fall ball.
Two very good pitchers, both play on 18U gold teams. Both throw no-
hitters. However, one of them has a freshman catcher that has not
really learned to handle this type of pitcher and she loses 2-0
on D3K's. Catcher must have missed 10 pitches. Coach from other team
was even hollaring when I would call it a strike and catcher could
not catch it. So I lost him too.

Coach keeps saying all sorts of things about strikes, balls.
Finally I ask him if we are discussing the strike zone. He saids,
"Well, what do you think I am talking about?"

"Coach, you got anything in the dugout that you need?"

"No, why?"

"Good, then you can exit straight out the gate behind you."

I would probably still be calling the game if losing pitcher had
had her regular catcher.

If you don't mind I'll use these words next time I have to toss a coach. I like it! (not the tossing, just the way wrote the words...)

I find that kind of comment provocational and unprofessional compared to "you are ejected" or "you are disqualified".


Not the case in this topic, but often it sounds like umpires are too touchy about someone questioning their calls.

You must have seen my comment added by a photo at Niema's site taken at Moskou. That coach has always something to talk about, mostly about strike-zone and calls on the bases...

Obviously, I don't think it is that bad in some circumstances. It is not unusual to have a coach attempt to elicit a "you're ejected", "you're gone", etc. just to put on a show for the fans and play the martyr.

Part of the reasons what some consider "smart-***" comments is to set the individual a bit off balance which can divert their attention (What do you care what kinda spot I got) and basically defuse the situation. It isn't meant to embarrass the coach as more often than not, s/he is the only one who can hear your comment.

BTW, arguing balls and strikes is against the rules and has nothing to do with "touchy" umpires.

I couldn't agree with you more Mike, I know that in my situation the coach was basically looking for a big ejection the last thing that I was gonna do was give it to him by asking him an I admit a very smart@$$ question it disarmed the coach put me back in control of the situation and then I very quietly sent him packing... I controlled the situation he didn't the theatrics that would have incited his fans for the rest of the game and got rid of him, a no loss situation for me...
And by the way I've been at this for 5yrs worked a college schedule after my second season and have a grand total of 6 ejections

The main reason I ejected the coach was because here we have two pitchers
throwing no-no's. Both are getting the outside, inside and nothing up.
He was the coach of the winning team. Guess because the poor catcher on
the other team could not hang onto the ball, he just figured it was
out of the zone. But I got tired of it, so corrected it.

Yeah but Glen we aren't all as patient and understanding as you are oh wise one...:)
btw just got an email from Mike G I guess we won't be getting an eval from Mr Lepisto after all... how are the ribs
