In NFHS, 3 man, does a base umpire go out on ALL fly balls to the outfield? If so how about a ball hit in the air that you know will not be caught, say a gapper or just a line drive to the outfield? I am reading up on 3 man since I got selected to work the Nebraska State Tournnament this year and have never worked 3 man. Any help on any aspects of 3 man or little hints to make the transition easier would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

shipwreck,
"In NFHS, 3 men, does a base umpire go out on ALL fly balls to the outfield?" Check with the UIC as each one differs. Just remember if you deviate, communicate. Cactus is the best I have seen.

You should go out on fly balls not line drives, Bagman is right ask the UIC. One trick is make sure base umpires make breif eye contact so you don't both go out and leave the Plate man to do all the bases himself, because when you go out you are suppose to stay out and observe.

Thats because all good things start with "s", like sex, sex, so on and so on. Sorry, I did do that

in, I would check with my plate umpire at the pre-game conference (umpires) ask if that is what they want. Around here we usually go out if the catch looks like it will be difficult or if right down the line. Either way COMMUNICATE

Shipwreck, I am working Wed-Fri. This is my 4th this time through. You will have a good time and work with some real quality umpires. Don't know if you have attended past state tourneys or not but it is a great atmosphere and a lot of really good ballgames. What part of the state are you from?? Look forward to meeting you and enjoy your districts as well.

I am from Crete which is about 25 miles SW of Lincoln. I also will be working A-1 district in Lincoln. Nervous since I never worked 3 man before. All my umpire friends say I am making too big of a deal since once I get the hang of it I will really enjoy it. Just don't want to slip up too much on my first State assignment
