ground ball hit to the 2nd baseman..she fields it cleanly and throws the girl out. The 1st base coach then tells the the base umpire that the 2nd baseman is playing with a 1st basemans's glove. This is in the 3rd inning. What would be the ruling under NFHS and ASA..please reference the rule for me. Also what would be your common sense thing to do? thanks in advance.

In NFHS this is a legal play as there is no rule about where the mitt can be used. In ASA reference rule 8-8-O which gives the offended coach the option of taking the results of the play or return all base runners to where they were at the time of the pitch and batter back to bat assumming the count at the time of the pitch. If the umpire was able to notice the mitt in the wrong fielders hand have them change before this happens. Don't forget to get rid of the mitt in the wrong position also. All this must be done with the same ruling of an appeal play, before next pitch legal or illegal, before the pitcher and all infielders have left fair territory and the catcher has left their normal fielding position on the way to the dug out, or before umpires have left the field at the end of the game. It doesn't have to come from the offended team though, it can be detected by the umpires also.

In NFHS, the catcher can play with a mitt or glove of any size. All other players can play with mitts or gloves as long as the mitt or glove falls within the size limitations specified by the sizing chart. Most all first baseman's mitts fall within the size specified.

Maybe I should open a new thread on this question but I'll stick it in here and see what comes of it. Has anyone ever had to measure a glove or mitt for its legality as per the rule book? I personaly have never seen this occur.

Nor have I.
