As often as I've seen coaches get hammered for some of their actions, I'd like to point out an instance where a coach was on top of the situation and in my view made a smart decision.
After the batters got set and after giving the signal to the pitcher the visiting team catcher would move to the inside corner or outside corner of the plate just milliseconds before the pitcher would throw to where the catcher adjusted. This went on for a few innings and the home team players were getting frustrated as the visiting pitcher was hitting her target like a laser guided missle. During the top of the fourth inning, the first batter was the catcher and after taking an inside pitch, a brush back pitch, the third pitch nailed her in the back. She took her base. Next batter was the pitcher and the first pitch to her was chin music and she ate dirt. Just as I was taking my mask off and rounding F2 to head toward the circle, the home team coach charged out of the dugout requesting time yelling for her catcher to meet her at the pitching circle. I granted time and the coach lit into F1 and F2 about sportsmanship and their lack of it. She removed both of them from the game. As the new pitcher was warming up and the coach was returning to the dugout I caught her eye and just loud enough for her to hear said than you. Sorry for the long post, but wanted to get the details in. Michael [Edited by MichaelVA2000 on May 7th, 2004 at 10:49 PM] |
