In another thread, I told you my daughter was going to umpire this season. Well, Dad's gonna take advantage of the situation to upgrade!
IOW, she get's to use my old mask (actually, a pretty good mask I was in no hurry to retire - it is Wilson lightweight single bar mask), and I get to upgrade. I was thinking about this mask, just introduced by +POS... AUL300 - SUPER ULTRA LIGHT ZERO-GRAVITY FACEMASK Two questions: 1) On the baseball board, there is a thread about deceptive trade practices by +POS (claiming things were in stock that weren't), poor customer service (late deliveries, months and months to get refunds, etc.) What is your experience with +POS? I bought some stuff from them about 3 years ago (minor stuff - an indicator, a few other small things) and had no issues. 2) Have any of you seen this new mask from +POS (since it is new, you'd probably have to live near a +POS store, but I thought I'd ask anyway)? If so what do you think? If not, what to you think from the website description?

I too have read the baseball-board. And I ended up ordering at Honig's last friday, wasn't looking for bad service's, etc...
If that's better than +POS? I don't know. I'm still waiting for my order, but hee I'm oversea's. So it will take some time!! And looking outside now (into the night), all we're throwing are snowball's (about 4 cm snow). Practice-games will start this weekend for baseball and somewhere in march for softball. I can wait al little bit longer. love, Alex |

Tom,
I just started using my new gerry davis PR1261 low-profile mask and it is great. Works great with 4 stitch cap and shipping weight is only 1.45lbs. Two guys at my last tournament tried it and order theirs. Have not seen the new version of the SUL, but the old one was great also. Davis mask weights about the same.

Also, Lester's Upstate Sports has the new Wilson Lightweight mask that uses the same technology as the +POS one. You can check it out at http://www.lestersupstatesports.com.

I see this all cotton +POS CPL shirt. Anyone ever seen this shirt or a blended version. Frankly, I have a portly build and the ASA all poly mesh or the +POS nylon mesh shirts are just cut too narrow for my comfort.

I've purchased a new Wilson A3007 low profile mask (actully Santa Claus gave it to me). Haven't had a chance to put it to use yet on the field though. Still 6 weeks away from the first scheduled college game assuming the snow melts and the fields dry up. Seems to work well with the 4 stitch bill. A little tight with the 6 stitch though. Looking forward to putting it to use though. My previous mask was a heavy older model given to me as a gift when I retired from coaching several years ago. After a weekend tourney my neck begins to feel the weight.
On a separate note: I am in the market for a new chest protector. I was hoping to get one that will work well calling both softball and Babe Ruth baseball. Any recommendations? Was leaning toward the new Davis found here. [Edited by Duke on Feb 26th, 2004 at 05:32 PM] |

The "low profile" mask (Daves / Wilson) is an interesting idea, and I am happy to see that it doesn't interfere with the 4-stitch hats - at least with some practice. However, it also appears that the low-profile mask does not use standard pads - is that true? And, +POS makes a big deal out of their pad technology - air pockets or some such? Anyone have experience with those? Personally, I won't buy from Davis (private, and probably silly, issue I won't bore the board with), so I'm glad to see Lesters is selling the Wilson sans Davis model of the same mask. That would neatly sidestep the customer service issues with +POS. [Edited by Dakota on Feb 27th, 2004 at 12:43 PM]
