Would you mind holding off a little longer? Most of us realize you would know the answers, but from a teaching view point, I would like to see what people struggle with.

Does this hurt or what?

Okay, I'm getting a headache here. I've waited long enough.

Quick Quiz

1) Can the DP play defense for fielder X, then switch defensive positions with the FLEX?
e.g., FLEX is F2, DP plays defense as F7, then switches positions in the field with F2.
Yes. The DP/FLEX rule has no standing on defensive positioning unless the Flex entered the BO for the DP and the team is playing with only nine.

2) Can a player start at FLEX, replace the DP slot in the batting order, and then be substituted as FLEX by a third player?
e.g., #20 is FLEX and #30 is DP. After a few innings, manager says #20 is now batting as DP. An inning later, the mangager says #4 is now FLEX and #20 is still DP.
No. Substitutes enter the game for players, not position. If #4 comes in for #20, #20 must leave the game. #4 can stay in the batting order, but there will be no FLEX during that period. #4 cannot come in for #30 because #30 is not in the game.

3a) Can the DP and FLEX switch positions as one move?
3b) If allowed, is it a charged substitution?
e.g., #20 is FLEX and #30 is DP. After a few innings, manager says #20 is now batting as DP and #30 is FLEX.
Only on defense, Harry. On offense, they never "switch". The FLEX may enter the BO for the DP (and only the DP), but that puts the DP (#30) out of the game. #30 can re-enter the game (which is a substitution), but only in the DP position. At that point, #20 would return to the FLEX position and the line-up returns to 10 players.

Thumbs up

Very good answers, as were Dakota's, but I'm CecilOne.

But I'm the umpire, so I don't have to.
