Injured Runner
I saw the following play on a Facebook Reel and it caused some debate.
NAIA Game Runners on 2nd and 3rd, when the batter hits an over the fence home run. Runners come in and legally score. As the batter-runner is rounding first she somehow injured herself and collapses to the ground, unable to continue her running duties. The defense picks her up and carries her around the bases so she can legally score because she can't be aided by her team mates. Similar play to what won an ESPY award for the game in Washington about 15 years or so ago. My questions are: Wasn't that rule changed so that a substitute runner could be put in place to continue the runner duties for an injured baserunner when the ball is dead? What is the ruling for each of the major rule codes (NFHS, NCAA, USA Softball, NAIA - I thought they used NCAA rules, but I may be wrong)? I understand the idea of aiding a runner being a rules violation, but I don't think the intent of that rule to to prevent a runner who becomes injured from completing her baserunning duties. |
