D3k, ncaa
asked this one before, don't think I got a resolution...
D3K, throw coming from the backstop to 1B. F3 set up well foul to take the throw (right foot on the bag). Is BR permitted to run outside the running lane (in fair territory) to avoid collision, and still be protected from INT, as is the rule in double-base rulesets? |
I can find no exceptions other than in 12.5.5 and 12.17.1.5.2
12.5.5 When either of her feet is completely outside the runner’s lane, in contact with the ground, and, in the judgment of the umpire, she interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base. Exceptions: She may run outside the runner’s lane: (1) if she has not yet reached the start of the runner’s lane; (2) to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball; or (3) if she leaves the lane on her last stride in order to touch first base. |
Thanks Bob,
As far as the double-base rulesets, I forget if the exception is black and white in the rules, or is in the rule-supplement section, or is just an official interpretation. |

I think NFHS does have a rule similar to ASA/USA:
8-10-2 The offense or defense may use either the white or colored portion: a. On any force out attempt from the foul side of first base. b. On an errant throw pulling the defense off the base into foul ground. c. When the defensive player uses the colored portion of the double base, the batter-runner can run in fair territory when the throw is coming from the foul side of first base, and if hit by the thrown ball, it is not interference. If intentional interference is ruled, the runner is out. |
