Not talking championship play here, just weekend tourney FP or Rec SP adults. Don't do Regional/Nationals cuz I don't like the politics involved.

Typically in slowpitch I'm looking first for bats I've seen a hundred times before then I'll look for bats that I haven't seen before. Adult rec guys try and sneak in "new" non ASA bats quite often. Then I look for beat up bats. These will get tossed from time to time for cracks and rattles and grips. Then I'll look to see if I remember the banned bat list and there's a bat I think might be on that list from a visual standpoint. If I find a similar one, I'll then check model #, etc. Very few get by me.

Fastpitch, the only bats I've ever pulled were beat up and cracked or bats with rattles........the girls don't try and cheat......

Not the little girls. On the other hand, the parents...

Absolutely! FP folks routinely beat me up in the early 2's telling me altered bats was purely a SP problem that would never show it's ugly face in FP.

Yeah, right! :)

When it comes to ASA and NFHS games, I don't check every single bat's model number when I do my bat checks. I only do that for NCAA play. Does anyone here do a model number check when you inspect bats? Or do you look for bats that look like those on the ASA cheat sheet?

I will check the model number if any of that model is on the non-approved list. I created a credit card-sized cheat sheet, laminated it and kept a couple in my bag.

Wasn't that big a deal.

I use a cheat sheet. That's why I want one with all the pictures.

I just print multiple copies if the bast list and carry with me at every game. The current list can be printed on one page if you use both sides of the paper. I do check the model numbers at my bat check, and yes it is a pain, and takes a couple minutes, but after 6-8 games you start to remember what on the list and what's not, so it goes quicker. Most of the HS coaches understand and don't complain too much. Until you start throwing bats out. Which usually is for damaged bats. The one that really fires them up is when they rattle, and you take it out.

A story from a slow pitch game a few years back....

I noticed a rattle in one of a teams bats and informed the coach that this bat was not to be used in the game. When he asked me why, I shook the bat so he could hear the rattle and he says..."C'mon, blue...that is just some dirt that has got in through the end cap"
