So, do you also expect the police officer hired for security and the trainer hired to treat injuries to leave without being paid for their time?

Not the same. The Ts & Cs are spelled out in the tournament registration / information available to the teams before they register. They know they will not get 100% of their money back if the tournament is canceled due to weather. The tournaments I am most familiar with cover part of the cost of such a cancellation out of the sponsoring organization's funds (such as a local team's organization) and part from a retained % of the registration fees.

Umpires don't get paid if no games at all are played, but they do get paid if games are started. The tournament organizers are responsible for managing the budgets and paying the professionals they hire.

I dealt with an organization who tried to weasel out of paying us when a team decided to pack it in at the last minute.

My final comment to the TD was...so you're keeping their money AND not planning on paying us even though we are here?

Mark, Jr., and I umpired in three tournaments where the entire day was canceled because of the weather after the first game of the day had started.

Umpires should be paid a full game fee for each contest that is STARTED. Once the first pitch is thrown, a full game fee is due.

There is a high school rule in Michigan regarding when we are due for full game fees, partial fees and no fees.

I assign for 21 high schools -- we have 16 softball teams and 14 baseball teams in our league.

If an umpire is not notified before he leaves for a field (given a reasonable driving time), he/she gets a full game fee.

You'd think that would encourage schools to cancel earlier in the day and keep costs down. You would be wrong.

No, but I'm sure they have a contract and, in some places, are required by law or local regulation.

Now, if you want to talk about a contract which defines payments status and responsibilities, that is what you get.
