CAN THE GOALIE STEP OUT OF CREASE, (both feet out) clamp ball with the stick and back up back into the crease with the ball still dragging under his stick?? is this re-entry ?? i think it is but since he does not possess ball in his stick, he is controling the ball with the back of his pocket and the ground?

Eevans will probably give full disclosure on this but:
Usually a goalie usually can keep at least a foot in the crease. I think thatif he's completely out it would be witholding the ball from play. A clamp isn't possession.

Rule4-20.c says the goalkeeper must be in possession of the ball for illegal reentry. Ball under stick not in possession so I wouldn't call reentry. (as a former crease attackman I'd like to think the goalie wouldn't make it back in the crease!)

I'm looking forward to eevans comments.
I think a clamp and drag by a goalie to try to get back to the crease to then get possession is withholding, I think this would be the same as a face off. If a middie clamps and there is no movement to gain possession it's withholding. Then again, I'm with Tom G. who lets a goalie make it back? -barn

goalie is completely out of the crease (not one toe on the crease line). He rakes the ball under his stick back into the crease. He does not have possession of the ball because he can't "pass, cradle, or shoot" with the ball. Legal Play.
It's not withholding because he is actually moving the ball across the ground with his stick (not simply camping out on it). Attackmen free to bodycheck him like any other player when the goalie is completely outside the crease. |
