I posted this over at nfhs.org boards(yes we have a lax forum now!).

Everyonce in a while I try to come up with a weird "what if" play and see what peoples answers are. So here goes one for today.

A1 has the ball in his defensive half of the field and is slashed by B1(flag down). A1 then passes to the goalie(A2), but it tips off of A2's stick and goes into the goal. (a) the ball hits the ground before entering the goal (b) does not touch the ground before entering the goal.

(a) is easy: 7-8-11 ball hits the ground and is not a shot it is dead, no goal.

(b) 4-9-10 says " The ball is in the defensive half of the field and the team in possession fails to clear the ball into its goal area." Technically the team failed to clear the ball. If you say the clear failed when A2 muffed the pass (or even A2 missed it entirely)before the ball went into the goal there is a dead ball right there, no goal.

More I think about the answer for (b) more I think that the team just blanked up and they scored a goal in there own net. I don’t like it but it seams that invoking the failed clear rule is just to forced. I will send an e-mail to a friend but it seems that it is going to be a goal followed by a man down face off.

Aww man, ya had it!

Situation 7.9 M:
During a slow whistle in the defensive area, the clearing player throws the ball to his goalkeeper to start the clear. The galkeeper misses the ball and it enters the goa. RULING: No goal, slow whistle ends.
