Hello everyone,
My name is Pat. I am an official for Basketball & Baseball. I was approached by a certian high school of my sons and they would like me to set up a floor hockey league. I loved playing hockey in high school (in P.E. class) and I agreed. I downloaded the NCAA Ice Hockey rules & the Floor Hockey rules but i need some help. Is there any websites that help teach how to officiate Hockey? (Pref. Floor Hockey) Any tips for me? Thanks

The NCAA ice book has a great section on positioning which may help you out somewhat. The IIHF makes available its rulebook, casebook and procedures manual (www.iihf.com) - that might be the most complete set of instructional material on the web in terms of rules, interpretations and procedural stuff (how to call a penalty, positioning during the game, etc.) Other than that, hockeyrefs.com is probably the most well-known hockey refs site on the web, but its light on instructional material. |

I'd recommend actually finding a USA Hockey referee seminar. Let them know exactly what you are doing and inform them that you would just like to learn to officiate a form of hockey so that you can use the knowledge and apply it to a floor hockey league. If they aren't receptive, they aren't doing what they should to increase the visibility and interest in hockey as a sport overall. In addition, you should be able to purchase Official's Manuals directly from USA Hockey. They're free to registered officials, but only one copy. ;o) I'd recommend using USA Hockey rules rather than NCAA rules, unless you can get a copy of the NFHS rules. http://www.usahockey.com http://www.nfhs.com Let me know how things go for you. What part of the country are you located? -Craig |

For any hockey officiating tips log on to the Canadian Hockey Association's website at http://www.hockeycanada.ca
It has the most comprehensive references available for officials, and links to other helpful stuff. |
