A team in our state last Friday night chose to free kick following a fair catch. The kick was made from a tee which would be used during any other kickoff. The kick went through the uprights and counted as three points. My question is this: For this kick to count as a field goal, should it have been made as a place kick?

From what I read, a tee is a tee is a tee. Teams don't use a kick off tee on FG and PAT because there isn't time to place the ball on the tee. But legally, there's no reason either a KO tee or a scrimmage kick tee couldn't be used.

Last time I looked, kicking from a tee WAS a place kick.
