Cleat Police!
|
A coach didn't know this was a rule? I guess it's not THAT surprising but it is a little.
|
Little rough, I mean the 15 yard unsportsmanlike against the coach for being improperly equipped wasn't enough? Send the kid off, mark off 15, and if he replaces the illegal cleats, then we're good to go. Sounds to me as if there is more to this.
You all do know that's what the plastic notch in the game card is for. |

Word is that the rule in Oregon mandates that the player is DQ'd.

Very harsh.
However, it's the coach's job to know the rule. They make all kinds of things that are illegal. that doesn't mean you allow kids to wear them. |

The regulations mandate that a player or coach who has been ejected must sit out the reamainder of the day and through the next contest at the level that the ejection occured. |

Agree Quote:
There is no penalty if illegal cleats are discovered during pre-game warm-ups, however, the player may not participate until he/she gets legal cleats. When illegal cleats are discovered during the game, ALL offending players SHALL be ejected for the remainder of that contest. That’s an Oregon-Only rules modification of NFHS rules and also an OSAA Executive Board policy. Unless there is some other portion left out of the linked news article or the Oregon officials sheet that we have not been made privy to, I don't see where there was the need to make him sit out another contest beyond the game ejection. Now in NC we have ejections which require a suspension (mainly for fighting) and disqualifications which may be what Oregon does also. |

My information comes from the OSAA 2012-2013 Handbook Article 19 - Ejection Policies - Ejected Player or Coach 7. Q. When a coach or player is ejected, when and over what period of time are the ejection period and suspension period? A. Note: If the ejection occurs in the last contest at a particular level, the suspension carries over to the next contest at any level in that sport in that season. Sport Ejection Period Suspension Period Baseball Remainder of that day. Sit out through next contest at that level. Basketball Remainder of that day. Sit out through next contest at that level. Football Remainder of that day. Sit out through next contest at that level. Soccer Remainder of that day. Sit out through next contest at that level. Softball Remainder of that day. Sit out through next contest at that level. Volleyball Remainder of that day. Sit out through next playing date at that level. Wrestling Follow NFHS Rules Book. Sit out through next contest at that level. |
Oregon School Activities Association is the state governing body, not an officials association.

As I said, unless there was something we had not been made privy to, which has now been cleared up, that was all the info we had to go with.
Its still harsh for essentially an equipment violation but when in Oregon, do as the Ducks do I guess. |
The NCAA also requires an ejection for the current and following game for a cleat violation. I believe it is the hashest penalty found in the NCAA rules.
|
One, fairly simple way to totally avoid the consequences, of violating even the harshest rule, is to comply with the rule. Wearing illegal cleats is rarely, if ever, an accident. It takes considerable effort to secure illegal cleats, and premeditation to use them.
Players are student athletes and, unfortunately, are sometimes prone to doing, or being persuaded to doing, stupid things. The severity of the penalty seems designed to insure retention of the consequence, which hopefully reduces the chance of repetition. For an adult coach guilty of allowing illegal cleats, the punishment described seems appropriate, if followed by additional administrative penalty. |
Yeah, I think we all understand that..
Conversely it could have been as innocuous as "hey manager, I need some new cleats in my shoes. "Ok". |
