Since many of you followed the threads concerning the coaches who assaulted a 19-year old football official in Palos Hills, Illinois last year, I figured I'd give you the epilogue: The State of Illinois, specifically the Cook County Court system DOES protect officials of organized sports contests.
Louis Trench, one of the coaches on trial, was found guilty in a bench trial on June 26, 2003 at the Hickory Hill's branch of Cook County courts. He will be sentenced at the same courthouse (Room 208) on July 30 at 10:30am. The story really shows how screwed up some of the folks associated with that team are, especially the mom (who happens to be the wife of the defense attorney.) They say there was no contact when apparently all the judge had to do was look at the video and quickly rule there was contact.
Maybe someone familiar with the case can explain why he chose trial by judge? That is usually done by crooks who know they are guilty but hope to get off on some legal technicality. If there is any doubt about your guilt, you are usually better off going with a jury and hoping you can get at least 1 person to side with you. |

The coach believed he was innocent all along, perhaps that's why he chose the bench trial. I observed the trial in person and felt his attorney could have done a much better job than he did.
Also, the league has decided to NOT ban the coach in any fashion. They believe his program (he is also president and athletic director) will fold without him so they will not punish him any further. |
