Usc

4th and 5 on B's10. Do you think this warranted a USC? See how far away the U was when he called it? What is the down and distance after this play?

1st and 10 for B after the penalty is enforced.

JRutledge Mon Oct 31, 2011 08:20am

I have no idea what it was called for. The official is on the field and knows what has been warned or talked about previously or what player has been warned. His positioning has little to do with this as the official furthest away often is the appropriated person to make the call as they have a better and wider view.

Peace

Result of the play is first down at the three. Dead ball UC will move ball half the distance. So 1st and goal at the 1.5. Standing over and saying anything other than "I am a registered EMT" to an obviously injured player on the opposite team will likely buy a flag

@bigjohn: Why do you think it was USC? The white hat signaled personal foul.

@radwaste: Why would you penalize B for A's taunt? If A made the line to gain at the B3, then they get a new series. Then enforce USC (if that's what they ended up calling). Then set the chains, 1/10 for A from the B18.

Oops, you're correct they made the LTG. However the foul is against A, so it would be 1st and 10 for A at the B-18.

I don't see any foul in that clip.

InsideTheStripe Mon Oct 31, 2011 10:36am

Based solely on the clip, I would have a hard time calling that foul from that position. For all I know, he could have been asking the guy is he was alright. Without an accompanying unsportsmanlike gesture (the downward head tilt doesn't count), I wouldn't assume a taunt when another official is standing within hearing distance.

As others have noted though, previous events in the game could change that perspective.

I do not see a personal foul on this play. The block was legal. If it was a USC for standing over the player, I don't see it unless he said something in which case the 2 other officials should have had a flag. However, without being there, you never really know.

I see the big hypocrite is suddenly silent about possible illegal helmet contact since it's his team that created the contact.

He's griped about it for the last 5 years and when it's one of his kids....

Did you see any illegal helmet contact? I didn't. Also, follow the enforcement. Referee could have at least moved at a slow jog instead of sauntering all over the field.

I did not see it for sure, but I see how it could have been called. And the point is BJ rants and raves about this not being called and it appears that this was probably the call. The umpire probably was trying to process this in his mind and threw the flag. After all, the signal was a PF not USC.

Peace

It's possible that it was illegal helmet contact, but that's the only possible foul I see on the play. It looked (from the distant view that I get) as if he leaned into the B player with the shoulder. From the impact angle, it's certainly possible to drive into him with the helmet, and I won't begrudge an official for calling that if he gets a good look at it.
On the other hand, I only saw the personal foul signal from R.
Good block, too bad it took a player down with it. It's almost gotten stylish to wear your helmet so loose that the slightest wallop gets it knocked off. It's like kids think that shows they're playing hard. I wish there was a way to go back and see if their chin straps are actually on right, because there's no way the brain bucket should be popping off if it's secured properly without the snaps coming off, too.

If you mean "bigjohn", then there's a reason he hasn't responded today.

That said, I'm not sure what the personal attack adds to the conversation (and I'm somewhat, but not fully, aware of his posting history).
