After watching a lot of games on the tv., I noticed a lot of players were getting physical with refs. Do you have any quick stories about players being physical with refs? And what was the end results?

I don't have any personal stories, but I think that Brown's penalty should be severe, and include a lengthy suspension. This is the sort of bad sportsmanship that automatically filters down to high schools.

Tom, I agree. We had a famous where on video a black player went out of his way to punch a white ref. This happened years ago and the reason why the player hit the ref. is because he thought the ref. used the 'n' word. The aftermath concluded that there were no evidence of any verbal abuse. Tom, how would you react if a player like Brown would knock you down?

Assuming that I could still get up, I'd throw the flag for unsportsmanship and eject the player from the game. I really believe that 99.9% of the AD's and Principles ( and coaches) would back me up and further penalize the player. If the incident went further than a knockdown, I'd have to depend on my 6'5" 275# umpire to come to my aid.

Tom, would you continue the game? Would you have the player or coach arrested? (the one who hit you). If you eject a coach and he did not leave the field or stadium, then what?.....Larry

Larry, I believe that you have to continue the game if at all possible. I would hope that the school administrators and/or game management would be helpful. I would rather trust the coaches AD's and Principle's to punish the offender rather that involve law inforcement. There was a case around here a couple of years ago. The game was a semi-state playoff (State final berth in the RCA dome at stake) the game was televised. One kid from the eventual loser was flagged for unsportsmanship, then flagged again and ejected. As he reached his sideline he proceeded to flip-off the crowd, cursing loudly, and made the same obscene gesture towards the TV camera. Several coaches and teamates tackled him and held him down for several minutes. When they let him up, he went right back at it. At that point several people (Administrators?) came out of the crowd and escorted the player off the field. My point is that the rest of the team shouldn't be unnecessarily penalized for the conduce of one miscreant.
