I AM SADDEN THAT ANY FOOTBALL OFFICIAL AT THE H.S. LEVEL WOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT THE AMMOUNT OF MONEY THEY MAKE ON A FRIDAY OR VARSITY GAME NIGHT. IF YOU ARE NOT DOING IT TO PROMOTE SPORTSMANSHIP AMONG THE PARTICIPANTS,FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME, OR TO GIVE BACK TO THE GAME. PLEASE QUIT NOW YOUR IN IT FOR THE WRONG REASONS.THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND I HOPE THER ARE OTHERS THAT FEEL AS I DO.

Some our fellow officials who are talented, have financial problems at home. I understand where you are coming from and I would do games for peanuts as I can afford it. However some officials can not and with the cost of life going up and the lack of good officials to promote to the next levels, it is necessary to get some kind of raises to help. Larry Gonski

I believe Larry's initial question was just to get a feel on what other officials are paid throughout the country. Yes, there are people who do it for the money and that will never change. Like Larry, I would also officiate football for peanuts, because I love the game. As our season just ended, I can only look forward to next year to do it again. Thanks Bruce

Here in North Dakota we get $50.00 for varsity football games whether it's a nine man game or the AAA level which are the largest schools in the state. Driver gets 50 cents a mile one way, I think....never really paid much attention to mileage. JV games are 25.00.

Forgot to add the fact that we do 4 man crews across the state in North Dakota....even in the playoffs. But, we lobbied the high school activities assn. and they've agreed to use 5 man crews in the 4 levels of state title games next year. A start. We'll probably use 5 man crews in our AAA games here in Williston and try to get our high school to pay the 50 for all five. If not we'll chip in 10 a piece and pay the new back judge. Eventually we'll get the fee for the back judge, if not right away. Smaller schools may balk a bit....but everything takes time.

I'm ok with wanting good money..
Here in Kansas the High School Officials get $52 for reg. season 55 for Sub-State and 60 for State But if you officiate any sport you should do it for the experience.. not the money Dustin Burson |
