Defensive Holding on 3rd Down

Let me preface this by saying I am not an official. I was at a game tonight (not rooting for either team).

3rd and Goal.

Defensive holding is called.

Half the distance to the goal and replayed 3rd down. Correct?

For some reason I had it in my head that it was an automatic first down.

Thanks

Too much college and pro ball will do that to you, Spence. :)

Only roughing the snapper, kicker, holder or passer and pass interference result in an automatci first down under NFHS rules.

CANADIAN RULING:

AFD only if the goal line would be reached when enforcing the full yardage of the penalty. Repeat the down.
