Camp suggestions.

I've got one year of junior high/JV football down. I'd like to do a camp over the summer to help me progress along a little bit faster. I'm located in central Indiana, but I am willing to travel a little bit for a good camp.

Any suggestions? Jim

Also, has anyone here been to the Personal Touch Football Camp at UCLA? Its advertised in Referee magazine. Just wondering if it is worth the money to attend.

Thanks for the input...actually I checked Honigs site the day after I posted the question. There is a camp in Indy around the end of June. I hope to attend...sounds like a real learning experience. Sloth

I went to the Personal Touch Camp about 5 years ago and found it to be very useful.At the time ,I was just starting out at back judge and learned a lot about reading keys and watching the play come to me.
On the field we were followed closely by an instructor who was talking to us all the time about what to be looking for and what to be thinking about.

I would not travel far for the Personal Touch Camp unless you are looking to network for college football. There's very little time available on the field. The most effective camp is the Reno camp hosted by Ken Rivera. Contact Univ. of Reno football coach.

The camp in INDY is great! Attended last year and there was a huge turn out. I expect the numbers to increase, so I hope that when we go to position break outs, they bring in more teams and use outdoor fields. IF not, we will be reduced to only 5-10 plays to practice with.
I woudl highly recommend attending the clinic this year!

What else can you tell me about the INDY clinic? I have one year in and really want to improve my game...is it too early for me to goto the clinic? I'm really eager to get better and work my way up as fast as I can...I'd love to do small college games eventually.

What level of experience would be expected to get the most out of a camp. Jim

The camp was worht it. There were officials from allovcer the stae there. There were also many college and a few pro officials there. We broke out into positional meetings for about 1.5 hrs. Mostly film breakdown and insite on how to work your position. Vary good info!. Notenough time for this segment. Should expand this year for more time.
Then we went to a practice field. 2 area HS came in and we worked 10-15 plays each. After 5 plays, the "offical in charge of that position) would go over things to work on.
Then there was a general mtg about nutrition (boring) and then a speaker oon enthousiam and such. SHould expand from last year. VEry well recieved.

I feel it is NEVER too early to attend clinics! Go, get ALL the info you can. NEtwork and talk to some of the senior officials! MAke sure you get to this one, and any others around your area. I am particial because I live in IN.

What level of experience would be expected to get the most out of a camp. Jim

I think any level would get a lot out of it. I have been working for 7+ seasons, and got a ton out of it. OUr Sr. official said it was priceless to him.

I gave Ken Rivera a call yesterday about attending the Reno camp this year but it's sold out. Ed was very kind and forwarded a e-mail to a director of the Chad Brown Personal Touch Camp held at UCLA this coming April . I got a call today from one of the directors telling me there were only a few spots left and they'd hold a spot for me if I was serious about coming. Im signed up to go so it looks like Im on my way to LA. If any of you guys will be there or have heard anything about it, let me know

Just for what its worth [ and for a free plug ] The 10th annual North Coast Football Officials Clinic will be held this year on Saturday JUNE 21st at the Cleveland Browns training facility [Berea Ohio]. This clinic was started 10 years ago by 3 guys that wanted to improve their local association. The 1st year we had 5 staff members and 6 attendees. Last year we had 10 staff members and 179 attendees from all around Ohio. This year, with the move to the Browns facility and with support from the NFL officials association, we are planning to cut off registration at 250 people. If you would like more info go to

Well I plan to register for the INDY clinic as soon as I get the info packet. Maybe next year I'll travel to a multi-day camp. Hopefully one of yall can give me some more advice. I've only been on three and four man crews. I enjoy the umpire/backjudge position. But having to play the hybrid position, I didn't get to really work either the correct way. If I attend this clinic I expect to have to pick a position (for the position meeting). Any suggestions?
