This is my first post. I was a rookie this year. NFHS. I have been reading your posts all year. Wonderful forum! Someone asked me about the legality of the center faking the snap and running with the ball. I don't have my book with me. I know this is not legal. I want to know if it is legal to fake the snap, touch the QB's hands with the ball and then lay the ball on the ground for someone else to pick up.

The snap must leave the center's hands and touch the ground or a team A back in order to be a legal snap.
If the center does not release the ball it is a 5 yard dead ball penalty for an illegal snap.

Second part of your question. The center may snap the ball to the QB, the QB can place the ball on the ground, and the center may pick it up and run, but the referee must be informed of this prior to the play.

The QB cannot hand the ball forward to the center.
However, see rule 7-3-2a: The center can turn around and face his own goal line, and the QB can then hand the ball forward to the center if the center is at least one yard behind the line. The key points to remember are: 1. The center must completely release the ball in order for the snap to be legal. He cannot leave his hands on the ball, touch the QB's hands, and then take the ball and run with it. 2. The center must turn and face his own goal and be at least 1 yard behind his line before the QB hands him the ball forward. 3. Or the QB can place the ball on the ground and the center can pick it up and run but only if the referee is notified prior to the play.
