I'm curious what associations across the nation do to recruit new officials? Anything that works well?

Official for Hire!

OZ,

Probably the same as many. Ad in the paper prior to the season and note on our website. We're probably not as agressive as we could be.

Our new guys are about 50/50 from the ad and word of mouth. We seem to have a lot of guys that are involved in education (teachers, administrators, etc.). Also, we have a lot of crossover officials that work other sports (where do they get the time?)

However, the best of all talent pools to recruit new officials is the local optometrist office. Anyone who has failed an eye test is instantly put on our mailing list. It saves a lot of time in agreeing with the coaches when they tell the new guys that they're blind. They just simply say "I am" and hold out a tin cup as they work the wing! LOL(All proceeds go to the "New Officials Training Fund")
