Random question

Being in the south, high school football is played on Friday nights. However, when I see highlights of games from other areas (seemingly northern states especially) they are played during the day.

When are these games played? Friday afternoon? Saturday afternoon? Is this due to the cold weather or some other reason?

Just seems strange to see varsity football played during the day. Part of the excitement in doing hs football for me is atmosphere of playing under the lights.

Random answer: blueberries.

Another answer: around here, some schools play during the day in order to use facilities that are already scheduled for Friday night. All 4 Canton city schools, for example, play their home games in Fawcett Stadium, at the Hall of Fame.

Some schools share football fields... some football fields don't have lights... some schedule afternoon games for additional publicity.... some just do it because hey, why not?

About the only time around here varsity games are not at night on Fridays is the day after Thanksgiving. Of course, Saturday regular season and playoff games are all day. We have many Thursday night varsity games in our area due to stadium use, all are at night, but start at 7 instead of 7:30 -- pretty much the universal football start time in Texas!

So do Walsh & Malone which sometimes have games at 11am & 3pm on Saturday to leave room for a 7pm saturday night game.

Friday nights came to be time for HS varsity play so as not to conflict with college varsity play, which had staked out Sat. Same way pro football came to be played Sundays. They would play during daylight but students are still in class as early as they'd have to start to get the games in, except early in the season when the sun sets late, daylight time.

Here in New York City there's not much of an audience for college football locally, so the high schools tend to play on Saturday. Lots of fields here don't have lights. In the 1960s when I was there, my private school (no lights) played some varsity football on Fri. afternoon, often before the last class had finished. "Can we quit now? They're about to kick off." Or we'd be looking out the window at the field the last 15 mins. of class.
