Spurries Says Bama Broke the Rules

Steve Spurrier has requested that the SEC look into Bama using tape to mark the spot for an XP and/or FG. It sounds like he says they put tape down to mark the spot for the ball and then picked up the tape after the kick.

Would this violate a rule?
What benefit does it give to the kicking team?

I doubt this breaks any specific rule. I have never heard or seen this done.

I also have no idea what benefit this would have. I am assuming they put the tape down right before the XP or FG? Maybe the rules will not allow this in the future, but I do not see the big deal right now.

Peace

Did they have a little snow plow come out and clear the spot before the kick?

The NCAA football rulebook (Rule 6-3; Article 10; subsection d) says:

"Any device or material used to mark the spot of a scrimmage place kick or elevate the ball makes the kick illegal."

Is he actually just getting around to complaining about this? We were marking the spot of the hold back in the early 90's in the Big 8 with tape or a small ball of something white. Anything to give a good reference point to put the ball on. We didn't publicize it to the officials but I think they could tell we were doing it.

What was the point of making that illegal? Unfair to blind kickers?

Spurrier is correct.

Marking the spot, doesn't have anything to do with kickers. It would be an aid for the holder to place the ball at a specific predetermined spot.

Like the holder, kneeling, has a lot of choice? His lucky blade of grass?
