Basic spot question
I understand that running plays are penalized from the end of the run but what if A1 hands off to A2 and a touchdown is scored however during the run A3 was detected holding. Where is the basic spot?

Basic spot
The basic spot is going to be the end of the run, in ths case the end zone. The foul happened behind the spot so you go to the spot of the foul to mark it off.

Under the All But One principle -
For running plays, the basic spot is the end of the run. Fouls committed by the offense behind the basic spot are penalized from the spot of the foul. For example - 2nd and 5 for A from B's 30 yard line. A12 hands the ball to A40, who runs for an apparent TD. (a) During the play A65 is flagged for holding at B's 22. (b) During the play A65 is flagged for holding at B's 10. The basic spot is the goal line. In both (a) and (b) above the foul was committed behind the basic spot. This is the spot where the penalty is enforced. Results - (a) A is penalized 10 yards from B's 22. 2nd and 7 from B's 32. (b) A is penalized 10 yards from B's 10. 1st and 10 from B's 20. |
ZYS,
Your rule reference is wrong. You're citing text from rule 9-2-3 b, which applies to defensive players. |
Padawan Brandon is talking Fed, thus we are talking Fed. Confuse him not, you will.
