Do Over....
[Making a quick visit from the Basketball side of this forum...I heard there is a lot of football knowledge over here...so here goes]
Was watching a NFL game Sunday...Seahawks vs. Tampa Bay. A loud whistle, from the stands, was heard by the Tampa Bay punter. The punter stopped after the balled was snapped. He just held the ball after it was snapped thinking the official blew the whistle. The Seahawk players simply grabbed the punter and held him untill the white hat came over and stopped the play. The punter explained to the official that he thought an official had blown a whistle...so he stopped. After the punter's explanation, the white hat went to each Coach and told them they would do a "do over". Question: What is the procedure, for this sitch, in a H.S. football game? And...if anyone knows...what is the procedure, for this sitch, in a NFL game? BTW...it seemed fair enough to do the "do over"...just had never seen that happen before. Thanks

Rule 1-1-6 says "The R has the authority to rule promptly, and in the spirit of good sportsmanship, on any situation not specifically covered in the rules. The R's decisions are final in all matters pertaining to the game."
So, if it is obvious that that is what happened, I think the above rule would qualify and you could award a "do over." You would have to be there to know how it all went down and if a "do over" was the proper thing to do. Obviously the NFL has a similar rule if that is what they did. They are better in knowing their rules than we are at knowing ours. Last edited by MJT; Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 08:38pm. |

Also, the rule allows you to go find the person responsible for the whistle and placing said whistle where the sun rarely shines.
